Norton Radstock JKA, back by popular demand!
In May 2015 the instructors of Norton Radstock JKA Karate Club paid their annual visit to Keynsham and District Mencap Society 18+ Club at their club headquarters to run a Karate training session. This is the third year that Norton Radstock instructors have attended the Mencap Club and they were left in no doubt how much the members were looking forward to yet another enjoyable karate session. From the rousing cheer when we entered the hall to the applause as we left, the session was full of enthusiasm and fun.
The instructors, Mark Reeve, Rob Tidbury, Steve Harris and Geoff Hooper along with club member David Bynoe took the children through a session of kihon. Led by Steve, the instructors demonstrated a range of blocks punches and kicks, which the members and their helpers copied. Even wheelchair bound members joined in with punches and blocks, showing once again that karate really is for all.

Norton Radstock JKA, back by popular demand!
In March 2014 the instructors of Norton Radstock JKA Karate Club paid another visit to Three Ways School in Bath to run a Karate activities morning for the Keynsham and District Mencap Super Saturday Club.
The popular session is becoming a regular annual diary date for the club’s instructors, with yet another fantastic response from the Mencap Club members.
The instructors, Mark Reeve, 4th Dan, Rob Tidbury 4th Dan, Steve Harris 2nd Dan and Geoff Hooper 1st Dan took the children through a session of kihon. Led by Steve, the instructors demonstrated how to make defensive blocks and how to attack with punches and kicks, which the children and their helpers emulated with great enthusiasm. They also learned that Karate is about body control, balance and co-ordination. The session ended with the instructors giving a demonstration of kumite, which had all the children cheering loudly for their favourite competitor. The Saturday Club is for children with disabilities and learning difficulties whose ages range from 5 to 18 years.
The previous month, Rob, Steve and Geoff did a similar session for the Keynsham and District Mencap Society 18+ Club at their club headquarters and this time took along one of Norton Radstock JKA’s newest members, Paul, who had only been training a matter of weeks. As usual the instructors got a rousing reception from the 18+ Club members, who showed that enthusiasm was all that is needed to enjoy a karate session. Again the Instructors gave a demonstration of kumite and kata, which was well received. The biggest round of applause of the night was reserved for Paul, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as did all the instructors.

Norton Radstock JKA a hit with Keynsham Mencap!
Following on from the successful activities sessions at Three Ways and Fosse Way special schools, Norton Radstock instructors, Mark Reeve 4th Dan JKA, Rob Tidbury 4th Dan JKA, Steve Harris 2nd Dan JKA and Geoff Hooper 1st Dan JKA, brought JKA karate to the members of Keynsham and District Mencap Society 18+ Club at their club headquarters on Thursday 30 June 2011.
Led by Steve, the instructors once again demonstrated how to make defensive blocks and how to attack with punches and kicks, which the twenty or so adults and their helpers copied with great concentration and enthusiasm. The enthusiasm and effort displayed by those who attended was nothing less than amazing and typified by the rousing kiais that almost raised the roof off the hall.
At the end of the session, Mark and Rob give a demonstration of jiyu kumite, with both Steve and Geoff encouraging the members to cheer loudly for them both. The session ended with a group photograph and thanks all round, for a very enjoyable and memorable experience and one that the Instructors will never forget.

Steve Harris also took JKA Karate to Fosse Way School in Radstock, North Somerset where he ran an eight week introduction to karate course as an after-school club. Fosse Way School is dedicated to pupils with special needs and the objective of the after school clubs is to introduce pupils to a different physical activity. All pupils trained hard and showed great effort as in the true spirit of Karate-do and were rewarded at the end of the course with a certificate of achievement.
